Vulnerable Adults Policy
Last reviewed: May 2025 · Next review: May 2026
Wellcome Church is committed to the safety, dignity and wellbeing of every adult in our community — particularly those who may be vulnerable. We will always act with compassion, care and respect.
Who this policy covers
A vulnerable adult is any person aged 18 or over who, because of disability, illness, mental health, age or circumstance, may be less able to protect themselves from harm or exploitation.
This policy applies to all trustees, volunteers and anyone acting on behalf of Wellcome Church.
Our principles
- Dignity — we treat every adult with respect, regardless of their circumstances
- Empowerment — we support people to make their own decisions wherever possible
- Safety — we take action when we believe someone is at risk of harm
- Confidentiality — we handle sensitive information with care, sharing only what is necessary
Types of abuse
We take seriously any sign that a vulnerable adult may be experiencing:
- Physical abuse — hitting, restraining or causing physical harm
- Emotional or psychological abuse — threats, humiliation or controlling behaviour
- Financial abuse — theft, fraud or misuse of someone's money or property
- Sexual abuse — any non-consensual sexual act or behaviour
- Neglect — failing to provide necessary care, food or support
- Spiritual abuse — using religious authority to control, coerce or harm
What to do if you have a concern
If you are worried about a vulnerable adult:
- Take the concern seriously — do not dismiss it
- Listen carefully, but do not investigate yourself
- Do not promise confidentiality
- Tell our Safeguarding Lead as soon as possible
- Write down what was said or observed
If someone is in immediate danger, call 999.
